What a Catch!!!!
In 2006, I travelled to the Mighty Miramichi to fish with my friend & guide, Stephen Sprague. We surveyed a few spots that have been successful for him in the past on the Sunday I arrived, and would fish the 1st three days of the week. The 1st two days weren't very successful, one fish raised. My proficiency in windknots was captured in a horrific pic he took. The 3rd & last day, I hoped would fare better. We went to the Wayerton Bridge pool on the NW Miramichi to try my luck. I waded the pool, with a few sports watching me from their cars ,to see if anything was moving. A few smolt later, I was nearing the slack water at the end of the pool. The funny thing was, as the water got slower, it was getting deeper, away from the current. I was nearly to the top of my waders when I decided to look down,to check the footing of my next step. I spied something on the bottom, and kicked with my foot,to see if it would raise up in the water a bit. Through the silt, I saw it- a flat whitish object flipping over. I sunk my arm into the pool shoulder deep, not unlike a gannet's plunge. What I came up with was almost as good as a salmon. My arm hoisted my booty to the air- a folded $20 bill. With that, I figured my luck was done. I tipped my hat to the river, pocketed the $20, and walked out of the river to my waiting guide. That evening, that find got Stephen & I a fine dinner at the local greasy spoon in Red Bank, and still had a tip left over. The only ones that ate better that night were the skeeters that removed a few pints from the two of us. A good laugh, indeed.
